Errr we have...

Does anyone remember the old IBM? Back when they were the big cheese in computers? I always picture these very clean cut guys all dressed the same in the stiff corporate white button shirt and tie when I think of IBM. I believe that image came from an early Apple commercial.
Anyway, somehow in my mind IBM always seems to stand for "I've Been Moved", following how the corporation would shuffle their employees about every couple years to a new office.

Well, the actual point of this post, other than to dredge up some strange mind association within my skull is to let everyone know we have moved to a fantastic new website that Carolyn Cannon designed. At one time I thought I was pretty good with computers, but in my best days I could not have come up with what she has created for us. Got you curious, huh? Okay, just so you can see it for yourself, I'll post this last, limited time link to the new home of Storm Ridge.

http://stormridgecardis.com/

I want you to know, evil Keith thought it would be great fun to somehow forget to post the link. Oh well, not giving into the dark side has Caleb and Lucy pouting a bit, but I played fair. Well, this time. Seeya you all on the other side. (sheesh, mind associations, somehow that phrase has me thinking of Pick Floyd and Dark Side of the Moon).

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://stormridgecardigans.blogspot.com/2010/09/ibm-or-ive-been-moved-errr-we-have.html' title='IBM or I've been moved... More than a few had to have photographs with her. I have no idea how many photo albums Clem is staring in.

It was a good trip, a lot of beautiful county, and a great gathering at Megan's. Evil cute puppies, beautiful dogs and good people, what more do you really need. Clem did not make the return trip with us, she has located her new very bestest forever friend, Huxley. She has been staying with Carolyn until we pick her up this weekend. She is sorely missed by both Jo and myself, also by all the other residents of the forest retreat. so we will be pretty happy to get the adventurous young lady home, hopefully in a delicate condition.

birthday girl...

Little Lucy would like to wish all her remarkable brothers and sisters a very happy and profitable one years birthday!

(message from Lucy) I was doing my walking around the house game where my tail is supposed to look like I am not having fun. The first two days she was awarded RWB over some great competition. That second day I watched as the judge came oh so close to giving her the prize. The next two days she was not what the judges were looking for, so got some much needed experience.

Saturday we brought Clem with us and it is good to know that she has not lost her magic touch. I swear she must have a "pet me I'm cute" sign that only others can see. She is a wonderful ambassador for the breed. Many I spoke to became very interested after she had her way with them.

I dont understand what happened to my picture taking skills(?), but I took over 200 pictures and most are so blurry that I can not make out who the dog is. After this, I think I will have Jo do the pictures, she seems to have a knack for it which I lack. It is pretty disappointing at any rate, I thought I might of had some nice photos.

Lucy did seem to have a lot of fun, so this adventure was absolutely worth it, because that was the main purpose overall. Everyone loves a happy puppy, maybe that is part of Clem's charm.

Lucy goes to town...

I was able to talk Mandy into having a house-guest for the weekend, Lucy was able to get some playing in with Hannah and was taken out in public for some needed socializing. Just wanna have Snow!

Well, October 29th and we have gotten the first taste of snow. Not a promising sign for me given how much I have to drive each day to work, but as you can see, some see snow as a grand adventure and a new excuse to play! Lucy did not know what to think of snow the first time she saw it, but watching Clem and Iris play, she decided she wasnt going to let the wet, cold, white invader stop her from having fun. I have learned one thing about Lucy, she has a single-minded determination that would equal Calebs, and that is saying a lot. An example would be sneaking into what ever her relations are eating, they growl, they snap, she gives them a "whatever" look and digs in deeper.

I love that aspect of her adorable personality, if we can translate that determination into her show career, I feel she will be a force to be reckoned with. She's also smart, when a head on demand for attention doesnt produce the results she desires, she's picked up some of Clem subtle skills of moving in and looking adorable. One way or another, the little princess seems to get what she is after. Hopefully, we can manage to get some stacked pictures soon, at least now she has learned that the table usually means treats for not trying to jump off.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://stormridgecardigans.blogspot.com/2009/10/corgi-girls-just-wanna-just-wanna-have.html' title='Corgi girls just wanna... Iris is very much her mother's daughter, very unassuming and affectionate. She is also the most curious of our Corgi children. If there is a noise, you can be sure that Iris will be investigating. She might have her mothers fantastic personality, but she also has her fathers agility, this girl can stand still and jump four feet. Surprised the hell outta me the first time I seen it. She is long and lanky right now, so we will wait a bit for her to fill out before showing, but return she will! Happy birthday Iris and all her siblings!

Birthday for the Freedom litter

Happy Birthday to the Freedom Litter, what a remarkable group they are! Each of the siblings remarkable in their own special and unique way. Clem has always been perfect for us. She is the first dog we have shown and given her "flaw" she was able to teach us so much about that aspect of having a special dog. Her losses will probably always greatly out number her victories, but that made those victories that much more cherished. I still firmly believe she will gain her championship, I know like me she will not stop trying. She loves the attention of the ring and under the sunlight, she glows. The princess does love the spotlight, whether in a show ring or at home. At any rate, to us she always was a champion, born of champions and a very special young lady. Without further ado, Clementine, then and now...

Lucy at the TriCities

Lucy today visited the show in the Tri-cities. Both Clem and Iris adore the little firecracker, she has her own very unique personality, which suits both Jo and myself just fine. We just have to remember that if it isnt nailed down and she can reach it, well, it's hers. She has the normal Corgi stubborn drive, very similar to Caleb in some respects. In fact one of her favorite games is herding Caleb who is very skittish around the little girl. He tries to bluff her with snarls and snaps that as far as I have seen are not close to touching her, but she just smiles and moves in for another jump on his head. Clem on the other hand is very protective of Lucy, if she even thinks that Caleb is serious or Iris is playing too rough then she moves in with the authority of a supreme court judge and game over. Iris is gentle with the Lucy-girl and I think she believes they are sisters, lordy to they love to play when Clem isnt playing the over protective mother. As you can probably tell, I have been calling her Lucy-girl, Jo on the other hand likes to call her Lucy-goosey, which to me has connotations of a rather loose woman. Anyway, hope to get some stacked pictures in Richland, good to have expects around for that. :)

Lucy at the forest retreat

We got some pictures of a very special little Lady, if you notice the second picture includes Clem, well. Clem is her self-proclaimed body-guard. I have re-taped her ears, hopefully I will have the luck I had with Clem's, but time will tell. Shes a wonderful girl, full of life and very eager to please. Huge thanks to Jeri and Mandy for all the work involved to bring Lucy to the forest. Later we will get phots of the others, Lucy and Iris playing when Clem isnt around to herb Iris away. The of course Lucy herding poor Caleb all over. She loves to chase him around. I really need to get the grass cut this weekend, otherwise it will start looking like a forest too. :)

Caleb!

Well, it has been around a year since the remarkable Caleb has graced our lives. Caleb is a dog that seems to be overly judged by his reputation, but he easily one of the best dogs I have had the pleasure of having in my life. He is such a mix of traits, playful, silly, then mischievous and ornery, but always so eager to please. He has always been a genuine good dog.

From his expressions and intelligence to his solid build and beautiful coloring, I figured when he entered our lives he would be a wonderful stud for Clem. As often happen with plans, things change. We had Caleb's hips xrayed and those pictures came back not so good. As the vet went over the photos, Caleb sensed my disappointment and I could tell from how he reacted he felt I was disappointed in him. That brought me around and I spend the rest of that night letting him know how wonderful he is.

Mandy came up and confirmed that his hips we not acceptable for breeding. Then as we had breakfest, my mind wandering, she made the statement I half heard "you can always find him a good home." and my reaction sort of stunned.. "huh? he has a good home." Then Mandy sort of laughing at me, she knew Caleb would never leave our home and was playing with me.

At any rate, we had Caleb fixed, I swear that affected me more than him. But, as the saying goes, "know thyself" If we did not have him fixed, well, I might have ended up tempting fate.

Mandy warned me long ago that the Corgis are like potato chips, well, she is right. I am so lucky to have a home that has the room to support our growning family. Soon little Lucy-Girl will arrive and I felt that Caleb needs to be showcased a bit more. Clem and Iris we are going to let mature a little before showing. We happen to live fairly close to Canada so I plan to see whether we can get both gals's a Canadian championship as they dont see the half-mask and coloring as such a flaw.

Lucy, well, from the pictures has many of Clem's features, I think showing her, I will be her largest handicap. So, if you happen to see me walking too slow moving her in the ring, or something else, do say something, your not going to hurt my feelings by giving me advise.

Okay, well, this was supposed to be Caleb's spotlight, I got off track. Without further ado, I bring you Caleb!

Clem, Iris and a Bone

Clemetine with her favorite toy, a bone... It has been a rough couple of weeks for both Keith and myself and Keith thought it might help to write this. So, I guess I will give it a try. I got Abbie a little over 11 years ago at the local farm and feed store. She was a lab mix, with what I don't know. Some thought she might be greyhound, border collie or blue heeler. I never really cared because she was just a great dog. I got her after another dog had passed away and my mom thought I should get another dog. It seems like we looked at quite a few puppies but for some reason none of them went home with me. On the day I got Abbie, we were going to look at a couple of litters and decided to check at the feed store first. I saw Abbie and I picked her up and she put her little arms around my neck and clung for dear life. That pretty much summarizes our life together.I was asked many times if Abbie was an abused rescue dog because she was always a little timid and shy. A lot of people may not have put up with it but I like to think that maybe I understood it a bit better because I can be the same way. She was never mean or aggressive but when she would first meet somebody for the first time, it would have to be Abbie that made the first move. Especially when she was a puppy she had separation anxiety. I will never forget coming home after being at work and opening the door to find a room full of stuffing because she ate my couch. She also would like to "read" books, catalogs and magazines while I was away. I also had to make a emergency trip to the vets because she was having a panic attack over what we never did figure out. Up until Keith came ito our lives, my mom was the only other person she could stay with otherwise she would have a panic attack. Abbie loved to fetch. It really didn't matter what is was, a stick, ball or her "monkey" (a stuffed squeeky toy) as long as she could run and get it. We would have to make her stop because as my dad would say "you're going to blow a gasket." She really liked to swim and would spend hours retrieving sticks from a lake or river. She was a great camping companion and we had a lot of fun camping together just the two of us. She also got to go to the Oregon coast a couple of times and loved to run on the beach and chase seagulls.

I was a little worried about Abbie when we got Clem. I wasn't sure how she would react because she was so use to having me all to herself. I shouldn't have worried though. She took over the role of being Clem's mom. Clementine would copy anything that Abbie was doing it didn't matter what it was. It was really fun to watch and would make us laugh. They always slept together cuddled up to each other. I know that loosing Abbie has been really hard on Clem too and I think that some credit has to go to Abbie for Clem being such a good dog.

I took Abbie to the vet because she had been drinking a lot of water and urinating a lot too. Her appetite wasn't very good either so I thought I had better get her checked out. I was worried that she had diabetes or something. What we found out was that she had too much calcium in the blood and after futher examination they found a large tumor. She had cancer. I was devastated to say the least. The vet gave 6-9 months. She was gone in less than 2 weeks. I miss her so much. After I took her to the vet she went down hill fast. Her back end started to give out on her and she could only take a couple of steps at a time. She refused to eat. It didn't matter what we tried, wet dog food, left over roast or raw steak, she wouldn't eat it. It was a very hard decision but in the end I had to love her enough to let her go. I think it was the hardest thing I have ever done or been through. It has been said to me that dogs are just a heartache waiting to happen. In some ways I do agree, but if asked the question would I do it over again knowing how it would end? I would say yes, a thousand times yes. Where else do you find such unconditional love, devotion and loyality all for a few pats on the head a few bites of food?

Never enough time...

This is going to be a long post on plans and goals.

I have so many plans that need to be completed and I watch the summer days just glide by so fast. Living in the forest retreat has so many benefits, but as many of you know also there are the day to day chores that need attention. This spring I had three projects I needed to see completed to feel like I was making progress on my dream of living in a home that was moderately self-sustaining. First build a wood-shed that can hold four plus cords of firewood. I determined I needed that last winter when I was shoveling my wood pile free of snow.

Second, an addition to the house of 1000 plus feet. This is to be a two story addition, first level a mudroom entry, both for me and our furry children. A breeding, grooming, storage area for our new addiction. Thanks Mandy, you said the Cardigans are like potato chips. I think that they might be more like heroin to certain personalities, ya cant get them outta your mind. One reason for my endless questions. Okay, off topic. I ramble, sorry. The rest of the first floor going into storage and a laudry area. The upstairs I plan to make into an office, a bedroom and bathroom for guests. This will have a nice deck which should have a view of the river. One benefit of living in the mountains, once you get above the trees, you have a great view.

The third project is probably the easiest, I want to add about a 1/2 acre to our "yard". Want to add this for more dog room, room to put in a nice raised bed garden and maybe a few chickens. I would have them roam around rather than a coop, but given our two older dogs are both bird dogs, might be an adventure teaching them a new trick. I always know when the wild turkeys are near, those two start having a fit, chickens in the yard might be too much for them to bear.

Being pretty good at construction has benefits, but also obligations. This last month my mother had some heart issues and two surgeries. Being that her washroom is in the basement and I have seen her climbing those stairs with the same determination as someone attempting Mt Everest. With the same shortness of breath as someone doing that altitude climb without the oxygen, well, I knew that laundry needed to be moved upstairs. Since for some reason she could not locate a contractor to make some changes to her house, I felt I better step in. So, now on weekends I am a contractor. Last week a large closet, this weekend and next week the new laudry room. Hopefully, I can get it all done and with an indian summer, I can get my plans on their way. If the addition has the exterior done, I have all winter to work on the inside. The woodshed is in progress as my energy allows. The fence is sort of staked out, well, in my mind at least. :).

Life has a way of changing your plans, maybe I will complete some of my goals for this summer, maybe I wont. But, I do know how this summer has helped to shape my plans and future. The dog shows have been so rewarding. The knowledge gained from watching, listening has been invaluable and when Clem has been chosen those few times, its like watching your kid hit a home run. Thank you Mandy for this wonderful additition and your patience. In fact, thank you all. How reading the blogs, has helped to shape what I want to create with our home and future. How much these little Corgis with the huge personalities will always be a part of our lives. How everything always seems to happen for a purpose. Seeing the kennel at Megans new home brought about how I can add something similar to our landscape. Ever since I was a kid and read up on ecosystems, how I wanted to create something similar. I am not sure how the dog run vision fits in as of yet, but I know in my heart it does. The pieces slowly come together, how it will unfold, I have an idea, but the total vision eludes me. I guess that is why they call it the future, there is your "undiscovered county"

Clem's pretty papers...

Last August Clementine and Hannah took part in a sun-baked IABCA show. Both girls did very well, and this week we received the documentation for the ton a shiny medals she won. Under the IABCA guidelines Clem's half-mask is not judged as harshly. Mandy felt this would be a good start for her and probably for us as well. It was a bit grueling, lord knows Jo suffered, poor girl came out looking like a ripe tomato. I did mention sun-baked, right? At any rate, here are her pretty papers for being such a trooper. I wonder why we didn't get pretty papers for endurance...

Iris at the forest retreat...

Here is our latest visitor, little Iris showing Clem and Caleb how to play. They all seem to be catching their breath, because this weeks main event is tag. It's hard to take pictures of the Corgis when they are on the move, I'm not talking about a stroll either, those little legs are deceiving and they eat up the ground chasing each other and they move like dolphins, shifting directions at will.

I want to thank both Mandy and Henry for allowing me to sneak off with their children, I believe the socialization is very helpful for both Clem and Caleb. It's amazing to me how much Caleb adores both Hanna and Iris, with Iris especially he acts like a big goofy puppy wanting to show off. I am not sure who is having more fun, them or us watching them. It's way better than TV!

Clementine in Oregon...

Here are a couple of pictures of Clem in Bandon at the show. Adorable as always, but then I am very biased. This girl firmly believes everyone should love her. Ask anyone at the campfire that evening as she slowly moved to greet person in turn around the circle, stealing attention and giving kisses to anyone she could. She is so charismatic that she always manages to gather strangers to comment and give her attention when ever we are out in public. You have to admire her personality, as she is not overt about it, she just sort of melts you with those huge brown eyes and gentle demeanor. Thank God Mandy is willing to show her, for I know I would not be able to do her justice.

Bandon Beach Party

First, a huge thank you to all for the wonderful hospitality! Seeing and meeting everyone in Bandon was great!

This a small sampling of the pictures we took of the kids playing on the beach. From how they acted, this is their version of utopia. I have to admit, watching their antics supplied Jo and I with some great laughs. Especially when they find themselves suddenly standing in the ocean, the look on Calebs face was priceless. It is so much fun to watch them play. One problem we did find with pictures on the beach, most show a wonderful view of their hind quarters, as they seem to be constantly running.

Caleb Surpised by the tide.

Daring Caleb...

Hannah!

Clem!

Caleb!

Which way do we go!

Howard the Cat

The morning before we left for Oregon, Jo was woken up by our alarm system, Clem. Investigating, we found the body of Howie laying in the yard, to our dismay he had left us. Howard was only six years old, so this came as a shock to both of us, as we have another feline, Sofia who is 21 and Erma who is 12. We live in a dangerous place for cats with preditors ranging from coyotes to cougars, owls and hawks, not to mention the rattle snakes. I know from investigation, that none of the above touched Howard. He was a champion of outwitting them all, he knew his home and every escape route.

Howard was a remarkable cat and I had to respect his incredable hunting and survival skills. I can not count the times we would find live birds flying in the house, gifts from Howie, myself I am not sure if they were for Jo, or for the other felines. Myself, I am normally, not a cat person, but this one was different in so many aspects, you just had to love him. We have other cats, but Howie will never be replaced or forgotten.

and here comes Cenwyn...

Seeing everyone else has gotten to be famous, Cenny made his voice known and wanted to be included, I'm not saying that being on this blog would qualify for fame, but here comes Cenny! (insert old tonight show music for Johnny) Cenny lives down the hill from us with Jo's parents, Roy and Millie. He might be the most spoiled canine in history, if not, he is in the top ten easy.

A very opinionated young man, he has no qualms about telling you how wonderful he is and how he is not spoiled enough. Concerned over their new home owner, Cenny was seen by the local vet, who has stated that there is nothing wrong with him and his back has healed very well. He did say to maintain his weight, which is why Cenny believes he is not spoiled enough. One thing for certain, Cenny loves to run all over the huge yard and he has his parents convinced he is absolutely the bestest dog in the world. Which in my book, is a pretty good thing. I will admit, Cenny is a pretty great dog in my view too, wonderful disposition and personality. To know him is to love him.

Equal time for a special boy...

This is Caleb, while Clem often plays the princess, Caleb has many traits; mischievous, cantankerous, and an eager to please attitude. Often though he is an unbeliveable goof, running full speed with a toy or bone in his mouth to show off. If you mention "red ball" which is his favorite toy, you can really see he is well named: "starrynites devil made me do it" His eyes seem to glow with anticipation of the chase to come. Megan has done us a favor which we will find hard to equal in allowing us to have Caleb in our lives.

I had hoped I would be able to breed him to Clemetine, but after having his hips checked and then reviewed and confirmed by Mandy, we decided it would be best to have him altered, least I talk myself into breeding him anyway. I have been fortunate to have had many dogs share my life since early childhood, Caleb has set the bar very high with his zest for life, Caleb is a very special boy.

Clem, playing in the yard...

Well, I was trying to have Clem free-stack, which didnt turn out as she felt the game was much more enjoyable when running around weaving between legs and chasing Caleb. Still, the main picture on the page showing Clem was at Lewiston this spring, so figured a recent one would be in order. Also, she is one of the most loving dogs I have ever seen, but she can be subtle about it. Get her victims hand to petting her, then soon she is on her back with her tummy being rubbed, or sneaking into their lap. A very cunning princess. Yes, she firmly believes she is a princess. This is my brief warning about Clementine, so now if you meet her, well, you have been warned. Oh, as a side note, notice the bone pieces? They once belonged to our other dogs, but Clem is very good at gaining possession and fully understands the concept of ownership. I am a firm supporter of suger imports, sneak a sip of my coffee and you might have an idea what that red stuff tastes like (j/k) Eventually, I'll get it so the buttons work so then I can post pictures of our little monsters, er darlings... This is definitely a work in progress.
